Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff

Lotería & Art Night
Sept. 19 | 7-9 p.m. | Brandt Student Center, Room 123 (B-SAC)
Play a few rounds of Lotería and work on a Hispanic art project while enjoying some snacks. Lotería – the Spanish word for lottery – is a traditional game of chance, often referred to as Mexican bingo, in which players use illustrated cards. Prizes will be awarded to winners of the games. Hispanic Heritage Month Movie Night
Sept. 25 | 9 p.m. | Goodson Chapel-Recital Hall
Travel from a rural village in Michoacán, Mexico, to more than 200 miles above the Earth in the International Space Station through this film inspired by the real-life, decades-long journey of NASA flight engineer José Hernández. With the support of his family, José’s drive and determination culminated in the opportunity to achieve a seemingly impossible goal. Gabriel Alegría Afro Peruvian Jazz Sextet
Oct. 6 | 2:30 p.m. | Armstrong Concert Hall
The Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet culminates a day of masterclasses and clinics for regional high school students with a performance of high-energy Latin jazz that defies expectations. Hailed for its inventive programming of traditional Afro-Peruvian music, the ensemble stands out in the field of Latin jazz artists. Alegría, who has been praised for his ability to blend folkloric Afro-Peruvian rhythms with jazz and other musical genres, is regarded for his electrifying live performances that are both educational and entertaining. The New York Times hails, “The Sextet knows its mission well and has the execution down to a science.”
